Event Details

Join author Lori Soderlind, director of the Manhattanville College MFA Creative Writing Program, for a short video and reading from her new book, "The Change: My Great American, Postindustrial, Midlife Crisis Tour." Have you ever wondered why there is a Cleveland? Or a Paducah? Or why, if no one wants to live in Buffalo, they went and made a big city up where it's so cold? Author Lori Soderlind was motivated by places such as these to travel through the country looking for answers. Not long before the election of Donald Trump, and in the throes of a classic female midlife crisis, the journalist and college professor sensed that so many American places seemed to be in decline, or falling apart--kind of how she was feeling about herself at the time. Her memoir, "The Change" (a finalist for this year's Lambda Literary Award in memoir) tells the story of a journey in a trailer with a very old dog, finding hope in despair and coming to terms with loss--in a way that resonates more deeply with American experience as each year passes. Please join us for this event and a discussion after on the shifting identity of the United States, and how to find hope in times of struggle.
